гуглить (guglit)

GOOG-leetverbInformal

A Russian slang term. Browse all Russian slang.

What it means

  1. To google. Completely naturalised: it takes ordinary prefixes (загуглить for a single look-up, погуглить for a browse) and nobody registers it as foreign any more.

  2. The template for a whole class of verbs — лайкнуть, репостить, забанить, скинуть в личку — by which Russian swallows English technology vocabulary whole and conjugates it.

Examples with translations

  • Загугли, там за секунду находится.

Just google it, it takes a second.

  • Я весь вечер гуглил, как это чинить.

I spent all evening googling how to fix it.

Where it comes from

Google plus the infinitive suffix -ить. The prefix system does the rest: Russian aspect pairs form automatically around any new stem, which is why borrowed verbs integrate faster than borrowed nouns.
