хуй (khuy)

What it means

   The taboo word for the penis, and the single most productive root in the language: dozens of everyday words are built on it, most of which have nothing to do with anatomy.

   In the phrase иди на хуй it is the standard way of telling someone to get lost, roughly 'fuck off' but a degree harsher. ни хуя means 'not a damn thing', до хуя means 'loads', хуйня means 'rubbish, nonsense'.

   Listed here because the derivations below cannot be explained without it, not because a learner has any reason to say it.

   The root is normally written х** or replaced by хрен in any context where the speaker is being careful.

  Note: A real insult between men, not banter. Expect it to end the conversation or start a fight.

• Он ни хуя не сделал.

  He did absolutely nothing.

Where it comes from

Slavic, most plausibly from the root of хвоя 'conifer needle' via an older sense of a pointed shoot. The widely repeated story that it is an acronym or a Tatar loan is folk etymology with nothing behind it.
