What it means

  1. For now; to start with; anyway. Marks a provisional decision made to stop deliberating rather than because it is the right one.

  2. In a bar, とりあえずビール is close to a fixed phrase: 'beers to start', ordered before anyone has looked at the menu.

    Note: Said to the waiter within seconds of sitting down. Ordering anything else first mildly surprises people.
