prendido

prehn-DEE-dohadjectiveInformal

A Colombian Spanish slang term. Browse all Colombian slang.

What it means

  1. Tipsy — pleasantly drunk, talkative, still functioning. The specific stage matters: Colombian has a graded ladder and prendido is the good rung on it.

  2. Further along the ladder come tomado, jincho and, at the end, the state that produces a guayabo. Saying prendido when you mean jincho is an understatement everyone recognises.

Literally: Switched on, lit.

Examples with translations

  • Ya estoy prendido, mejor no manejo.

I'm a bit merry already, better not drive.

  • Se puso prendida con dos polas.

Two beers and she was tipsy.

Where it comes from

From prender, 'to light, to switch on' — the same metaphor as English 'lit', arrived at independently and much earlier.
