What it means

  1. Damn; for God's sake. An exclamation of frustration, surprise or emphasis, and the single most common swear word in Spain.

  2. To bother or annoy someone: no me jodas, 'don't wind me up' or 'you're kidding'.

  3. To ruin something: se jodió el móvil, 'the phone's broken'.

Where it comes from

The literal sense is obscene. Spain's casual, high-frequency swearing surprises Latin American speakers more than almost anything else about peninsular Spanish — joder from a colleague or a grandmother is entirely ordinary.
