What it means

1. 1.

   To swindle; to cheat someone out of money or out of what was agreed. Stronger and angrier than кинуть, and implies the speaker considers the deception deliberate and personal.

2. 2.

   The softened обмануть is the neutral word, and the near-identical надуть ('to inflate') is the printable substitute that most people reach for in mixed company.

Where it comes from

Prefix на- on ебать. The metaphor of sex as deception is old and cross-linguistic — English 'screwed over' works the same way — but in Russian the derivation is transparent to every speaker.
