What it means
A contemptible idiot — close to 'arsehole' in force and in usage. The charge is not stupidity so much as behaving badly and not noticing.
Not technically one of the four mat roots, which is why it slips into newspapers and television where пиздец would not, but it is unambiguously an insult and lands as one.

Where it comes from
From муде, an archaic word for the testicles, still alive in dialect. The often-repeated derivation from a Sanskrit or Mongol root is invention.
