What it means
Go on, you can do it. Shouted at someone about to take an exam, run a race or go into a difficult meeting — encouragement, never an instruction to fight.
Korean 화이팅 is the same borrowing with the same meaning, and the two words' histories are intertwined.

Note: A 1960s energy-drink slogan so famous it is still quoted as a set phrase.
Where it comes from
From English 'fight', narrowed in Japanese to pure encouragement. 頑張って is the native equivalent and is commoner; ファイト is brighter and more sporting.
