ウケる (ukeru)

What it means

1. 1.

   That's hilarious; I'm dying. Said as a reaction, usually to something the other person has just said or done.

2. 2.

   Of a thing rather than a moment: to go down well with an audience. あのネタはウケた, 'that bit landed'.

Where it comes from

From 受ける, 'to receive' — originally theatre and comedy jargon for a joke being received well by the audience. The first-person reaction use, where the speaker is the audience, came later.
